Are senior citizens discriminated against today’s society?

The Japanese government has a tendency to focus on senior citizens too much. However, I do not agree with this policy.  There are several reasons why I think so.

Firstly, there is something unfair at work. Senior employees are forced to retire from their companies when they reach a certain age. Furthermore, firms seldom hire seniors. I insist that our society should change such customs and utilize their abilities because they have a lot of experiences, skills and knowledge. The elderly can still contribute to the economy.

Secondly, the tradition about respecting the elderly is disappearing. It was natural for Japanese people to live with their grandparents half a century ago. We have learned in daily lives about the importance of senior people. Recently nuclear families have been prevailing. Many elderly people worried that they don’t have anyone who takes care of them when they get sick.

Finally, the living conditions of elderly people are getting worse. It is reported on TV news that the government is promoting reduction in pension and raise in premiums for health and nursing care insurance. On the other hand, prices have been rising.

In conclusion, it is hard for the elderly to live in peace in today’s society. They have difficulties in continuing working, loneliness and poor living conditions. Therefore, we can say that senior citizens are discriminated these days.
